The hadith **“Lā yudkhilu aḥadan al‑jannata ʿamaluhu”** (“No one will enter Paradise by his deeds”) and other narrations with a similar مضمون are regarded among the problematic traditions in Sunni hadith collections. These narrations point to the فضل and mercy of God toward His servants without considering their sins or acts of worship. According to the apparent meaning of these narrations, human deeds have no role in one’s entry into Paradise or Hell. However, according to the **Imamiyyah (Twelver Shiʿa)** and the **Muʿtazilites**, based on rational and transmitted evidence, a person is deserving of reward in return for obedience and deserving of punishment in return for disobedience.
In contrast to the **Jabriyyah**, who interpret these narrations as indicating that deeds have no real relevance in attaining reward, **Ashʿarite** scholars regard these hadiths—through certain interpretive justifications—as supporting the idea that divine reward is granted purely as an act of grace. Discussing the various meanings of the preposition **bāʾ** in narrations such as **“Lā yadkhulu aḥadun minkum al‑jannata biʿamalih”** (“None of you will enter Paradise by his deeds”) and **“Lan yanjū aḥadun minkum biʿamalih”** (“None of you will be saved by his deeds”), and reconciling them with Qurʾānic verses such as **“Udkhulū al‑jannata bimā kuntum taʿmalūn”** (“Enter Paradise for what you used to do”), constitutes the most significant feature of the Ashʿarite explanations.
In this study, using a **content analysis method**, after explaining the aforementioned narrations, the views, arguments, and critiques of Sunni scholars concerning these hadiths—organized into three main categories—are carefully examined. Finally, these views are evaluated in light of the intellectual foundations of the **Imamiyyah**.
