The opening verses of Surah Bara’ah (At-Tawbah) were revealed to declare God and His Messenger’s disavowal of the polytheists, to clarify their status within the emerging Islamic community, and to purify the House of God and the great assembly of Hajj from the impurities of idolatry.
Initially, the Prophet of Islam (peace be upon him) entrusted these verses, along with other instructions, to Abu Bakr to announce to the polytheists on the day of the Major Pilgrimage (Hajj al-Akbar). However, by divine revelation, this duty was withdrawn from him and assigned to Imam ʿAlī (peace be upon him). Following this, Abu Bakr returned to Medina in distress, and the leadership of the pilgrims and the proclamation of disavowal were entrusted to Imam ʿAlī (peace be upon him).
Although both Sunni and Shia sources agree on the essence of this event, there are different perspectives and interpretations concerning certain aspects—such as whether it was limited only to Surah Bara’ah, the meaning of the phrase “a man from you” (rajulun minka), and the underlying reasons for this divine instruction.
This paper, employing a descriptive-analytical method and relying on mutawatir (consecutively transmitted) narrations found in exegetical, historical, and hadith sources from both Sunni and Shia traditions, seeks to demonstrate that Imam ʿAlī (peace be upon him)—who, according to divine revelation, was the self and soul of the Prophet (peace be upon him)—was divinely commissioned to convey the opening verses of Surah Bara’ah.
The phrase “a man from you” indicates that if mere kinship had been the reason for superiority, then ʿAbbas, the Prophet’s uncle and a closer relative than ʿAlī, would have been appointed for this mission. This shows that “being from the Prophet” in this narration refers not to genealogical closeness but to spiritual and divine proximity.
The replacement of the messenger of the verses by divine command and through the descent of Gabriel serves, on one hand, as proof of Imam ʿAlī’s superiority over other companions, and on the other, as a preparatory step for the community’s acceptance of his leadership and succession after the Prophet (peace be upon him).
