Approaches to Conflict Resolution in the Epistle of ʿAli b. Abī Ṭālib to Mālik al-Ashtar

چکیده

International conflict encompasses disputes arising between nation-states, individuals, and transnational organizations. It likewise includes internal intergroup conflicts within a single state, particularly when a faction seeks self-determination or endeavors to acquire greater sociopolitical or economic influence. Although such disputes and antagonisms may appear adverse, they remain integral to societal dynamics and human development. While the total elimination of conflict presents substantial practical difficulties, its constructive management remains feasible. A principal mechanism for mitigating discord is formal conflict resolution between the disputing parties, which necessitates well-defined, systematic frameworks to secure enduring outcomes. This study delineates conflict resolution strategies derived from the foundational governance epistle addressed by ʿAli b. Abī Ṭālib to Mālik al-Ashtar. Employing a descriptive-analytical methodology grounded in textual and library research, this paper identifies four core conflict resolution paradigms embedded in the text: (1) responsiveness to peace initiatives proposed by adversaries; (2) strategic vigilance following the conclusion of a peace accord; (3) strict adherence to contractual and covenantal obligations; and (4) the elimination of ambiguity in the terms and conditions of peace treaties. These approaches are subsequently analyzed within the broader context of classical Islamic political thought and contemporary dispute resolution.

چکیده [English]

International conflict involves disputes between nation-states, individuals, and organizations across different countries. It also encompasses internal intergroup conflicts within a single country, especially when a group seeks independence or aims to gain more social, political, or economic influence. While these disagreements and conflicts may be unpleasant and offensive, they are essential for human growth and development. Eliminating conflict or disagreement entirely is very challenging, but it can be effectively managed. One way to manage disagreements is through conflict resolution between the involved parties. This conflict resolution requires well-defined and effective approaches to achieve positive outcomes. This research work presents conflict resolution approaches based on the letter written to Malik Ashtar by Imam Ali. Using library research, descriptive, and analytical methods, four conflict resolution approaches were derived from the letter to serve as a guide for managing conflicts. These approaches include accepting the peace proposed by the enemy, being cautious after reaching a peace agreement, fulfilling all commitments, and ensuring clarity in the terms and conditions of the peace treaty. A discussion and analysis were conducted on these approaches.
