Abstract

The Akhbari school of thought within Imami Shi'ism emerged in the 11th century (AH), proposing a unique framework for religious understanding and asserting itself as the only authentic and valid method within the tradition. Sheikh Al-Hurr Al-Amili, a prominent proponent of this school, sought to solidify the principles of textualism (nass-oriented interpretation) by compiling Wasa'il al-Shi'ah. Through this monumental hadith collection, he introduced a new model for fiqh al-hadith (jurisprudence of hadith) and religious interpretation based on Akhbari methodology. Examining the foundational principles of the Akhbari school, particularly those espoused by Sheikh Al-Hurr Al-Amili, not only deepens our understanding of Akhbari thought but also facilitates a critical appraisal of the school and its contemporary neo-Akhbari counterparts. This study, employing an analytical-narrative approach, addresses the question: “How do Akhbari principles, specifically those of Sheikh Al-Hurr Al-Amili, manifest in Wasa'il al-Shi'ah and influence religious understanding?” The findings highlight two broad and fundamental principles: (1) reliance on narrations as self-sufficient sources, and (2) the validity of definitive and certain interpretations while avoiding speculative or probabilistic inferences in textual meanings.
