Abstract

The prevailing assumption regarding the two terms “the righteous” (al-abrār) and “those brought near” (al-muqarrabūn) in Quranic culture is that al-muqarrabūn occupy a station superior to that of al-abrār. In this article, by examining numerous verses from the chapters Āl ʿImrān, al-Insān, and al-Muṭaffifīn, and by drawing upon interpretive traditions (riwāyāt tafsīriyya) related to these verses—or in other words, by employing both textual and contextual evidence, as well as connected and discrete indicators (qarā’in lafẓiyya wa labbiyya wa muttaṣila wa munfaṣila)—it is demonstrated that al-abrār are indeed identical to al-muqarrabūn. The aim is to challenge this prevailing assumption and to subject the viewpoints of eminent exegetes such as ʿAllāmah Ṭabāṭabāʾī and Āyatullāh Javādī Āmulī to scrutiny and critical examination.
