Epistemic studies of the foundational hadith sources of the two main Islamic sects have been a focus for a large number of hadith scholars, both historically and in the present era. Hashem Al-Hassani, a contemporary Shia hadith scholar, is one such researcher who has contributed significantly to hadith studies in modern times. In addition to authoring several works critically analyzing major hadith-related topics, especially fabricated hadiths, he has written a comprehensive book titled “Dirasat Fi al-Kafi wa Sahih al-Bukhari” (Studies in al-Kafi and Sahih al-Bukhari). His motivation for this work is to assess the validity of the hadiths in these two important sources through a textual and narratological critique. Al-Hassani, in his book, evaluates the content and chains of narrators in both al-Kafi and Sahih al-Bukhari, applying a method of critique free from undue bias and partisanship. He begins by identifying unreliable narrators from both sources and weakens their reports based on his own criteria. In the subsequent stage, he conducts a comparative analysis of specific theological topics, such as wajib al-wujud (necessary being), bada' (innovation of God’s will), and taqiya (dissimulation), by comparing the narrations found in both sources.
