In the corpora of narrations of the Shīʿa and Sunni ḥadīth scholars, a lot of emphasis has been placed on intellection. The main issue addressed in the present paper is firstly to explain the dimensions of this reality in the heritage of narrations of both the Shīʿas and the wider Muslim community, and then to carry out a comparison of these two domains. The present paper, based on the inspiration of ‘the four causes’ in the jargon of Islamic philosophers, begins by explicating the subject, matter, form, and purpose of intellection in the two corpora of narrations and then, by comparing the results obtained, we arrive at the aspects that they have in common. And finally, we explain the points of divergence and differentiation between the two. The result of this research is that while expounding on the dimensions of reasoning, although the traditions of the two schools of thought have qualitative and quantitative differences, yet in general it is found that the relation between these two corpora of narrations is not one of “divergence” and opposition, but of “convergence” and “alignment”.
