The acceptability and probity of the process of narrating traditions is contingent upon certain conditions, some of which relate to the narrator of the tradition whereas others relate to how the tradition is relayed. Some of the conditions that pertain to the narrator, such as Islam, sanity, rationality, reliability, and precision are accepted by all experts, from both the Shīʿa and Ahl al-Sunnah. Yet other conditions such as maturity, faith, justice, courage, freedom, pedigree, sound knowledge of language, literacy, being a male, deep knowledge, ability to speak Arabic, ability to understand the meaning of narrations, being unrelated to the one from whom he narrates, the amount of narrations one has narrated, not narrating anything contradictory etc. are not unanimously agreed upon by the Shīʿa and Sunnī experts. With regard to the conditions that pertain to the relaying of traditions, differences also abound among the scholars.
According to this author’s research, the only prerequisites that are necessary for narrators are: Islam, sanity (while narrating only), reliability and precision. Likewise, for the process of relaying traditions, if it is a supplication, then simply mentioning it is sufficient and there is no problem in deleting the chain of narrators, truncating the narrations or narrating from written sources, as long as it does not distort the understanding of the tradition.
