One of the bones of contention between the two schools of thought relates to their different approaches to the narrations of the Ahl al-Bayt (a). This paper aims to investigate and analyze the scope of Ibn Abī Ḥātim’s approach towards the narrations wherein the name of one of the Imāms of the Ahl al-Bayt (a) appears in the chain of narrators; specifically, in his exegetical work: Tafsīr al-Qurʾān al-ʿAẓīm Musnadan ʿan al-Rasūl wa al-Ṣaḥābah wa al-Tābiʿīn.
This exegesis is particularly important because Ibn Abī Ḥātim referred to earlier exegetical works which are currently non-extant and he was also a contemporary of some of the renowned scholars among the traditionists and exegetes from both schools of thought - Shīʿa and Ahl al-Sunnah. What makes this exegesis even more special is the mention of certain narrations from the Ahl al-Bayt (a) that are not to be found in other Sunnī, or even Shīʿī, exegetical works. However, Ibn Abī Ḥātim’s lack of attention towards the narrations of the Ahl al-Bayt (a) in contrast to the narrations of the other Companions and Successors, and his not narrating any tradition from Imām Mūsā Kāẓim (a) onwards, are considered among the weaknesses of this exegesis.
