The traditions of the Prophet (ṣ) and the Imams of the Ahl al-Bayt (a) which we presently have access to, play an important supplementary role next to the Qurʾān in providing a deeper understanding of divine teachings. It is clear that all the quotations and narrations are not of similar authenticity. Some are definitive themselves while others require further unequivocal supportive evidence, and others only give rise to inconclusive verdicts. Some narrations play no other role but to present weak probabilities. As for the first and third types of narrations, we will not address them here. With regards to the acceptability of the second type of narrations, three general views present themselves. These are commonly known as the ‘minimal’, ‘balanced’ and ‘maximal’ views.
In this article, we aim to show how the ‘balanced’ view is correct and that solitary reports that are bereft of supporting evidence are authoritative in other Islamic sciences and the humanities, aside from the science of jurisprudence.
